Helpful consumer’s review
This Quad Core laptop seemed to be the only option in the price range for our professional webcasting application and it has lived up to its billing. We purchased it specifically to run live streaming software Telestream Wirecast, running up to four layers simultaneously including Firewire and USB capture inputs. This had overwhelmed a new Core2Duo T7300 machine, running the CPU at 70-100% and causing the software to drop from 25fps to as low as 13fps to compensate, so we had to be sure the replacement could cope.
We need not have worried; the MSI CPU runs in the same circumstances at around 30%, so has proven to be excellent value for the price. We preferred the 15-inch because we are always travelling, often flying to venues, and on the minus side the keyboard is cramped, but we are not worried about that, or interested in styling, or the fancy touch buttons, or the very high display resolution, or battery life, or the fancy audio outputs. It does our job brilliantly with processing power to spare and seems to be robust enough to cope with the hammering it will get from our itinerant work. Another factor in its favour is the built-in Firewire port, and I’ll probably use the HDMI output sooner or later – perhaps for edit monitoring.
We still have one or two issues with Wirecast but I don’t believe these to be platform-specific. I’m sure it won’t be long before I also move Adobe Premiere over to the laptop for mobile HD editing. Overall verdict: an outstanding tool for the job at the right price.
